Bins and toilets at events

The number of bins and toilets, and the placement of bins, is critical in ensuring no littering by visitors and responsible waste management for your event.

You must plan to:

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle waste as much as possible.
  • Consider the type of waste your event will produce and provide suitable recycling and disposal options.
  • Have at least one recycling station for every 250 people attending, depending on the type of event.
  • Place recycling stations near eating and drinking areas, and at all entry and exit points.
  • Clean up the site after the event.

Council recently adopted a Single-use Plastics Policy which impacts events taking place on Council-owned or managed land. Your event must adhere to the policy guidelines.

Recycling stations

Council has specialised bins available to hire for events. These event bins are brightly coloured in line with the kerbside collection service that many of your visitors will be used to using at home, work or school. These bins have large sticker signage to assist your visitors who may not be familiar with the colours in placing the correct items in the bins.

Each recycling station includes four bins: FOGO bin (Food Organics Garden Organics, lime-green), recycling bin (yellow), glass-only bin (purple) and general waste bin (red). It is recommended that bins be placed together to create a waste ‘recycling station’ rather than placing them separately around the event. This makes it easy for your visitors to put things in the right bin and recycle correctly.

Bins are subject to availability and fees may apply. Bookings are essential and must be made no later than two weeks before the event.

Local community groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations may be eligible for up to three recycling stations per event held in Council-managed parks or facilities.

Contact (03) 5422 0333 to discuss your event requirements.

If you are holding an event on private property you will need to hire bins from a commercial waste contractor.

Wash against waste trailer

The trailer is a joint venture of Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group (MRSG) and Council to reduce disposable plastic waste at events and festivals. It has an energy efficient dishwasher that washes reusable crockeries and cutleries at high temperatures to ensure hygiene and safety.

Bookings are essential to hire wash against waste trailer for the events.

You must ensure that adequate toilet facilities are available at the event, see Provision of Toilets at Public Events
