Building permit application process

Building permits

Council is currently taking 4-5 months to decide building permit applications, provided that the application contains all the information necessary for the application to be determined.

The building industry is privatised, which means that Private Building Surveyors working independently of Council may issue a building permit; owners/occupiers do not have to use Council's service to obtain a building permit. If the time that Council is taking to decide building permits is not suitable for your project, you may wish to consider using a private building service.

Before you begin any works, contact our Building department on (03) 5422 0333 to find out if a building permit is required and if what you want to do is allowed. You can also visit our Gisborne office and speak to a member of the building department in person.

Preparing your application

1. Complete a building permit application form and make sure that you have supplied all the required information outlined in any relevant guidelines:

2. Submit your application and organise payment by one of the following options:

  • Visit one of our offices to lodge your application along with any fees
  • mail it to Macedon Ranges Shire Council, PO Box 151, Kyneton VIC 3444 (credit card or cheque only).

You must ensure that all supporting documentation is provided and any application fees are paid at the time you lodge your application. Failure to do so will delay your application.
