Shipping containers
A permit may be required to temporarily place a shipping container on private property or Council land.
Under the Community Local Law 2023, controls apply to ensure safety, amenity, and appropriate land use.
Things you need to know/prepare before you apply
Applications submitted without the required documentation or payment will be deemed incomplete and will not be assessed. A new application will be required to be submitted.
What Zone is your property located in?
If you are unsure, you can look up your property zone
You may use this application if your property is located in one of the following Zones:
- Residential Zone
- Rural Living Zone
If your property is not located in one of the zones listed above, contact our Planning Department or visit Do I need a Permit?
Proposed use
- Storage (personal or commercial)
- Farm or machinery storage
- Habitable building or shed
- Building site use
Other information
- Size of the shipping container (10ft, 20ft or 40ft)
- Company delivering the container
- Aerial map showing location and setbacks from boundaries
- Property owner consent (if not the owner)
Requirement and Conditions
- Containers must not be placed over an easement without approval from the relevant authority
- Containers must not create safety hazards
- Visual amenity must be considered
- In rural areas, screening or positioning may be required
- Additional planning or building approvals may be required depending on use
Permit Fees
- $189 per container (up to 12 months)
All required documentation and payment of applicable fees must be provided at the time of lodgement.
Fees are non-refundable.
Shipping containers on Council land
In addition to the above permit conditions, shipping containers placed on Council land will also require an Asset Protection Permit.
