Container Deposit Scheme

Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is a Victorian Government initiative that provides a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned.

The scheme started on 1 November 2023 and aims to reduce litter, create new economic opportunities, generate new jobs and turn drink containers into new recycled products.

 

10-cent refund CDS baskets on public bins

Council has joined Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) by installing 100 CDS baskets on public bins across the shire, making it easier for residents and visitors to recycle eligible drink containers while they are out and about.

These baskets are open for people to both deposit their containers into when they are on the go, and/or take containers out of, to collect them for 10 cents.

By keeping these containers out of public waste bins, the initiative helps reduce litter, recover valuable materials and support a stronger circular economy.

Recycling tips

  • Check that it is an eligible container that you are wanting to place in the basket
  • Remember to check for the 10c mark
  • Avoid damaging or crushing containers. Crushed containers make it hard to read the barcodes, meaning they might not be accepted at refund points

  • Keep bottle lids on, as they are accepted for recycling too!
