International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is held on 8 March each year.

It celebrates women's achievements, raises awareness for women's equality, and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity and positive change for women and girls everywhere.

This year's theme, which is set by UN Women every year, is Balance the Scales. It highlights the urgent need to ensure fair, inclusive and accessible justice for every woman and girl.

“Balance the Scales is a promise for every woman and girl to be safe, heard, and free to shape her own future. In 2026, unjust laws, policies, and ingrained barriers still stand in the way of fair and inclusive communities. This International Women’s Day, we are calling on Australians to join a movement for real action – to transform our justice systems, amplify marginalised voices, and ensure equality is not the exception, but the rule.” - UN Women Australia CEO, Simone Clarke.

Join us for two great events to recognise International Women’s Day 2026!

This year we have two incredible events that will explore the theme in different ways: The Deplorables performance at the Bluestone Theatre on 28 February showcasing the story of Australia's first women's cricket teams, and an intimate chat with author Kaz Cooke delivered in partnership with Northern Books at the Kyneton Town Hall on 13 March.

If you are inspired to find out more about the cricketers in The Deplorables, you may also want to take a trip to Bendigo where a statue of Barbara Rae has just been unveiled.
