Mount Macedon - Clarke Street footbridge

Council has assessed a timber footbridge located at Clarke St, Mount Macedon as unsafe for pedestrian use due to structural concerns.

Although Council Officers were unaware that this footbridge previously existed, it is located on Council-managed land and therefore Council may be liable if someone was to sustain an injury while crossing this unsafe footbridge.

As an alternative route, please walk along Mount Macedon Road and Brougham Road. We appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience, but we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of users above all else.

December 2023 update

A letter was sent to residents in May 2023 regarding Council’s decision to install a barricade around an unsafe timber footbridge on Clarke Street, Mount Macedon to close pedestrian access. Additional warning signs were also installed on either side of the access paths.

These measures were put in place for the safety of residents and visitors. Ongoing Council monitoring has identified that the barricade continues to be removed and the footbridge is continuing to be used.

Council has now taken further action and removed the footbridge completely, to ensure public safety while we explore options for repairs or replacement of the crossing.

Council officers will be undertaking a survey to understand the pedestrian demand of the bridge as well as alternative pedestrian routes in the area.
