Syringes, Needles and Sharps Containers
Information on sharps container exchange, the Needle Exchange Program and what to do if you find a needle or syringe.
Sharps Container Exchange
For residents
Our sharps container program allows residents to dispose of used sharps containers in the collection bin at our Romsey Hub, 96–100 Main Street, Romsey. Returned containers are replaced with a new one, free of charge.
For safety reasons, sharps must be in an approved yellow sharps container. We cannot accept sharps in any other type of container. Purple cytotoxic containers are not able to be accepted by council.
Please never put sharps or syringes in household or public waste bins. Glucose Sensor Applicators contain a needle and must also be disposed of in a sharps container.
For businesses
Businesses that use sharps for procedures or services must arrange their own appropriate containers and disposal through a private contractor.
Needle Exchange Program
The Victorian Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is a public health initiative that aims to minimise the spread of blood-borne viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs and into the wider community.
