Macedon Ranges Shire Council Welcomes Inaugural Youth Council

Last updated on 13 August 2026

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is proud to announce the establishment of its inaugural Youth Council, marking an important milestone in strengthening youth participation and leadership across the shire.

The Youth Council comprises nine Youth Councillors, with three young people representing each ward, ensuring young voices from across the Macedon Ranges are heard and reflected in Council decision-making.

The newly appointed Youth Councillors will serve as advocates for young people aged 12-25, providing a direct connection between Council and the community’s youth. Through consultation, leadership and collaboration, the Youth Council will help identify priorities for young people, contribute ideas on local issues, and support initiatives that create a more inclusive, connected and vibrant Macedon Ranges.

Mayor, Cr Cassy Borthwick said the establishment of the Youth Council was an exciting step forward, providing a platform for young people to elevate their voice in the Macedon Ranges.

“Young people care deeply about their communities and have valuable ideas, perspectives and experiences to share. The Youth Council creates a real opportunity for them to have a say on the issues that matter most to them and to help shape the future of our shire. I congratulate all nine Youth Councillors on their appointment and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have as advocates for young people across the shire.”

The Youth Council will meet regularly throughout the year, working with Councillors, Council officers and community stakeholders to:

  • Represent the views and aspirations of young people across the shire
  • Champion youth-led initiatives, events and advocacy
  • Provide input into Council strategies, projects and policies that affect young people.
  • Foster leadership, civic participation and community engagement among young people
  • Create opportunities for young people to connect, collaborate and influence positive change.

As part of the inaugural Youth Council, members have also elected their first leadership team.

Council is pleased to announce Shiloh as the Youth Mayor and Matilda as the Youth Deputy Mayor

The Youth Mayor will act as the primary spokesperson for the Youth Council, while the Youth Deputy Mayor will support the role and lead Youth Council activities and engagement opportunities throughout the year.

Youth Mayor, Shiloh said they were excited to work alongside fellow Youth Councillors to represent young people from across the Macedon Ranges.

“Young people can’t vote for local Councillors or MPs, but as Youth Mayor, I want to work with Council to make Youth Council so influential that young people can shape our community without a ballot paper.”

Council congratulates all nine Youth Councillors on their appointment and looks forward to supporting their leadership journey over the coming two years.
