Bird flu

Bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) has been detected in WA, QLD, SA, NSW and Victoria (at Portland on 30 July 2026).

Overseas, this strain has caused severe illness and high death rates in birds and other wildlife. Human cases are rare and the virus does not spread easily between people.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:

• DO NOT touch them
• AVOID contact
• RECORD what you see
• REPORT by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888, or online: Report sick or dead wildlife online
