If you lose your dog or cat, call Council on (03) 5422 0333.
We will record details about your pet, including its:
- colour
- gender
- breed
- identifying features.
We will also take your name and contact details. This information helps us identify your pet and reunite it with you as quickly as possible.
Check if your pet has been found
If you think your pet may have been collected by a Council officer, check our Lost Pets Register.
You should also call us on (03) 5422 0333. We can confirm whether your pet has been found and explain what you need to do to collect it.
Before your pet can be released
Dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered with Council before they can be released.
If your pet is:
- not microchipped – arrangements will need to be made for microchipping before it can be returned to you
- not registered – you will need to register your pet before it can be released.

When different arrangements may be needed
In some circumstances, Council may make alternative arrangements for the care or impoundment of an animal. This may happen if:
- the animal has been involved in a serious incident, is unwell, injured or needs specialised care
- there are concerns about the secure confinement of a dog
- a dog has recently or repeatedly escaped
- a cat is subject to a trespass notice
- Council facilities are closed, including on weekends or public holidays
- extreme weather, a Total Fire Ban or a severe or higher fire danger rating applies
- the current owner cannot be identified or contacted.
Always call Council on (03) 5422 0333 about a lost or impounded dog or cat.
Fees and other costs
Owners are responsible for any veterinary costs if their animal requires treatment.
Impound and other fees may also apply.
Depending on the circumstances, Council may also issue a warning or infringement.
