Earth Creativity and Flame - An exhibition by Main Ridge Pyros.

Next date: Sunday, 05 October 2025 | 02:00 PM to Sunday, 02 November 2025 | 04:00 PM

You are invited to visit the Trio Art Studio and Gallery at Trio Road, Kyneton. Opened in September 2023, the gallery offers exhibiting and selling opportunities for ceramicists, sculptors, and other artists. We also provide mentoring for those seeking focused learning in various visual arts practices. Our second exhibition for the season is for the Main Ridge Pyros who are a group, hailing from the Mornington Peninsula, who bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds with a shared passion for woodfired ceramics. This exhibition features an eclectic collection of over 100 ceramic items, ranging from tiny and delicate, to large and bold, sculptural and visual to utilitarian and tactile. What is woodfiring?  Wood burns releasing heat which in turn cures clay into a permanent ceramic state and a byproduct of this process is fly ash which floats throughout the kiln chamber and coats surfaces in varying thicknesses. Marks are made in patterns as the flame licks and travels along its path. Wadding is used to separate pieces from shelves and each other if tumble stacked. Shells are also used in the process and leave behind imprints and halos of their existence. It is a rugged, unique process with scars and blemishes often left behind but in the genre of this process these are considered as gems in the wood firing world.

The Main Ridge Pyros group works collaboratively.  As Sue McFarland, the group's coordinator, explains: 'We work as a group, forming teams for working bees and firing shifts. Firing times alter, depending on what forms are being fired and the desired results. Firings usually continue for 2 days straight, including through the night. It is the firing process that brings out a comradery among those involved. Knowledge is shared, expanded and experiments are never ending.
