Potholes and road repairs
Macedon Ranges Shire has more than 1,700 km of roads. These include:
- arterial (main connector) sealed roads, such as the Calder Freeway, managed by the Victorian Government
- local sealed (i.e. bitumen/concrete/asphalt) and unsealed (i.e. gravel) roads, managed by Council.
Before reporting a road issue, check who manages the road so your request goes to the right place.
Who is responsible for different types of road?
Arterial (main connector) roads
Victorian Government departments/authorities (VicRoads / Department of Transport and Planning) are responsible for arterial roads, including highways and freeways. These roads are generally shown in yellow and orange on Google Maps.
Most main roads connecting towns across the Macedon Ranges are arterial roads. There are some exceptions, including:
- Three Chain Road between Carlsruhe and Lancefield
- Romsey Road between Hanging Rock and Romsey.
Council-managed roads
Council manages local roads that are listed on our Public Roads Register.
On Google Maps, these roads are generally shown in white.
Some white roads shown on Google Maps are not on the Public Roads Register. These may be:
- fire access tracks
- access roads for a small number of properties
- managed by another road authority
- unmaintained tracks that may be unsafe to use
- on private property and not open for general public access.
If you are unsure who manages a road, check our road map below.

Report an issue on an arterial (main connector) road
To report urgent issues or hazards on arterial roads, call VicRoads on 13 11 70. This will allow information to be relayed to the VicTraffic website.
For any non-urgent road hazards, you can submit an online request to VicRoads.
Report an issue on a local Council-managed road
Council regularly inspects and maintains local roads in line with our Road Management Plan.
Urgent requests
To report an urgent issue that poses a public safety risk, (e.g. a fallen tree blocking a road) and requires an immediate response, call Council on (03) 5422 0333 (24 hours a day, seven days week).
Non-urgent requests
Report an issue online or call Council on (03) 5422 0333 during business hours.
Council's Public Roads Register
You can ask Council to consider adding a road, or part of a road, to the Public Roads Register
Your written request should explain why you believe the road should be included and maintained by Council.
Send your request to the Public Road Committee
Before applying, read the Public Roads Procedure. It explains how Council assesses requests and decides which roads are included on the register.
