Types of student placements

Work Experience

Gain hands-on experience in a variety of roles that make a real difference in the community.

Offered in partnership with secondary schools, spend one week shadowing the people that keep this shire thriving.

Placement areas

  • Parks and Open Spaces – Horticulture, landscaping, conservation
  • Early Years – Supporting play-based learning in kindergartens
  • Hanging Rock Rangers – Park maintenance, visitor engagement, conservation
  • Aquatics and Fitness – Leisure centre operations, fitness programs, lifeguarding
  • Community Development and Youth – Event planning, youth engagement, social media

Engineering Placement Program

Gain hands-on experience with our engineering student placement program. We welcome waitlist applications from university students across civil, transport, water and related disciplines. Opportunities are offered based on project availability. 

What you’ll experience 

  • Exposure to local government engineering projects such as engineering permit applications, civil infrastructure design, traffic investigations and drainage investigations.
  • Mentoring from experienced engineers and project managers in a supportive environment. 

Eligibility 

  • You must be currently enrolled in an accredited engineering degree.
  • Able to commit to an agreed placement duration (typically 8–12 weeks, flexible by arrangement).
  • Right to work in Australia.
  • Placements require a driver’s licence and you may be expected to undertake site inductions.

Placement structure 

  • Timing: Our waitlist is open all year-round. Placements are scheduled based on project availability. 
  • Duration: Typically 8–12 weeks; shorter or longer arrangements can be considered. 
  •  Work pattern: Full-time or part-time, with flexibility around academic commitments. 
  •  Location: Office-based, with potential site visits and investigations across the shire  

Selection Process

  • Review: Applicants on the waitlist are matched to upcoming projects and team requirements. 
  • Interview: Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview (online or in-person). 
  •  Offer and Onboarding: Successful applicants receive a placement offer and commence pre-start checks (e.g., safety induction).

Please note: Submitting an EOI adds you to our student placement register. We’ll contact you if a suitable opportunity becomes available. If you haven’t heard from us within 3 months, you’re welcome to reapply
