World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025 event

In collaboration with the local Kindness to Elders initiative, the Kyneton Mechanics Institute will play host to an annual event bringing the community together to raise awareness about the challenges faced by older people.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a vital opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting and respecting older members of our community. It reminds us of the urgent need to raise awareness about elder abuse, to educate the community on its signs, and to empower individuals to speak up and act when abuse is suspected.

The event will feature a special matinee screening of the film Thelma at 2pm. Thelma brings attention to the growing issue of scams targeting older people and highlights the resilience of seniors in the face of these challenges.

Prior to the film, attendees are invited to take part in “Stir A Cuppa”, a government initiative promoting community connection. Running in a separate room at the KMI, this initiative encourages individuals of all ages to take time to sit down, share a cuppa, and check in with an elder—whether at home or in the wider community. Information and support resources will also be available.

Leading up to the main film, a series of short stories will be screened to shed light on the different forms of elder abuse and how we can respond as a community.

The event will be hosted by veteran actor Ian Rooney, who will serve as MC. Outside the venue, a coffee and donut van and a Scout-run sausage sizzle will offer refreshments throughout the afternoon.

To commence the day’s program, a flag-raising ceremony will take place at 12 noon, featuring a special performance by the Young Voices of Macedon Choir.
