Romsey, Stawell Street – road reconstruction

Works are underway to reconstruct another key section of sealed road in Romsey, providing a smoother journey for road users and improving safety for pedestrians.

Following a similar upgrade of a section of Murphy Street in Romsey last year, Stawell Street in Romsey is being upgraded between Main Street and Pohlman Street.

Works include:

  • 130m of road pavement reconstruction
  • Installation of a raised safety platform at the Main Street intersection
  • Footpath and kerb and channel renewal on north side within the limit of works
  • Upgrades to the Pohlman and Stawell Street intersection, along with signage, line marking, and drainage improvements

Traffic management, signage and detours will be in place during the works, with the relevant section of Stawell Street to be temporarily closed to vehicles.

The service road along Main Street will remain open for most of these works but will also be impacted at times.

The contractor will work closely with directly impacted businesses and residents, to ensure access is maintained for deliveries/bin collections/property access as necessary.

How long will the works take?

Construction works started on 12 May 2025.

15 August 2025 update

These works were initially expected to take about six weeks to complete, weather permitting, by the end of June 2025. Despite completing all of the usual due diligence prior to construction starting, including geotechnical surveys, progress has been slowed by unforeseen ground water conditions.

Excess moisture in the ground is affecting the stability of the road pavement layers, so extra measures are being undertaken to drain and dry the site before continuing with the works. A permanent solution to manage the groundwater and mitigate its long-term impact is also being investigated.

We are continuing to work closely with the contractor to prioritise a solution to these drainage issues, though we do expect completion to now extend into late August or September. As disappointing as this situation is, it is important that we take the time to get it right, so we don’t have to come back later and fix it again.

The contractor is continuing to manage access to residents, the nearby medical centre and other businesses. We apologise to everyone impacted for the ongoing inconvenience and we thank them for their patience – we are confident that the project will benefit all users once complete.

Thank you for your patience while we complete these important works.

These works are funded through the Australian Government’s Roads To Recovery Program and is being delivered as part of Council’s 2024-25 Capital Works Program.
