Biodiversity Strategy 2026

This strategy is a refresh of the 2018 strategy. It retains the original guiding principles and vision that were developed for the previous strategy and brings it into line with new scientific knowledge, legislative obligations, emerging issues and community sentiment.

Objectives

  1. Protect existing biodiversity and native vegetation
  2. Improve existing biodiversity and native vegetation across public and private land
  3. Improve Council and the Community’s understanding and connection to biodiversity
  4. Enhance the capacity of community groups to undertake conservation activities
  5. Monitoring for landscape change

Priority projects

Priority Projects were developed in response to community priorities highlighted during consultation.

Priority Project 1

Protecting Wildlife, Protecting Us addresses the wildlife road toll in the Macedon Ranges, proposing an evidence-based project to trial wildlife roadstrike mitigation methods on Council roads.

Priority Project 2

Strengthening Biodiversity Outcomes on Private Land proposes extended engagement with private landholders across the urban to rural landscape.

Priority Project 3

Leading by Example: Building Biodiversity Capacity Across Council this addresses Council’s legislated requirements to consider biodiversity in decision making. It also aims to provide staff with awareness of best practice approaches to care for and protect the environment relevant to their roles.
