October is Bird Month - Join the Aussie Bird Count

The Aussie Bird Count is back from 20-26 October. This national citizen science project invites everyone to spend just 20 minutes outdoors counting the birds around them. It’s fun, easy and makes a real difference for conservation.

In 2024, more than 57,000 people took part, recording 4.1 million birds across Australia. Here in the Macedon Ranges, locals counted over 23,000 birds during 800 surveys. The Magpie, Crimson Rosella and Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo topped the list, but it’s not just the big, familiar birds that matter. Woodland birds like the Brown Treecreeper are a key indicator species, showing us how healthy our ecosystems are.
