Street tree planting
Every year, Council undertakes street tree planting to improve the natural environment of the Macedon Ranges, often focusing planting on a different town each year.
This ensures that our community receives the benefits offered by trees such as shade, increased property values, improved noise and pollution absorption, improved mental health, and reduced rainfall runoff.
Council’s focus is on planting the right tree in the right place. Tree species are carefully selected from Council’s preferred tree species list and based on a range of factors, with planting occurring between August and September - the cooler months giving our trees the best opportunity of establishing through the following summer.
Drawing from independent arboriculture inspections, suitable trees are planted at strategically identified locations along township streets.
Trees are purchased from local nurseries and Council staff ensure the new plantings are well looked after, watered regularly during the warmer months for the first two years to ensure they mature into healthy and structurally sound trees. Most trees are then self-sufficient after two years.
More information about this annual program and processes, including the preferred species list(PDF, 868KB) that we draw from, can be found on the Township Street and Park Tree Management Policy page.
