Rural Land Use Strategy

The Rural Land Use Strategy (RLUS) seeks to update the policy direction for rural land in the Macedon Ranges Shire. This is to account for the changing nature of rural land use, and to account for a range of Council and State Government strategies and changes to regulation made since the previous 2002 Macedon Ranges Rural Land Use Strategy.

Consultation has now closed. Thank you to residents, landowners, community groups and agencies for sharing their views. Late submissions are always welcome.

Work to refine the draft Rural Land Use Strategy continues as officers investigate and analyse submissions received and other public feedback in recent months.

Project update - July 2022

Council officers have been exploring options on how best to respond to the concerns raised by the community, particularly rural property owners in the existing Farming Zone. Council is seeking to clarify existing use rights with the preparation of case studies exploring the various scenarios we have heard. These will be placed on this webpage when available.

In the meantime, the project team continues to listen to feedback received from affected farmers and other landowners and develop further options to achieve a balanced outcome while trying to preserve high value agricultural land in the shire.

Officers are preparing a consultation report to respond to submissions and make recommendations to inform an updated version of the draft Rural Land Use Strategy.

The consultation report will be presented to Council at a future Scheduled Council Meeting. All submitters and subscribers will be informed when this occurs.

Additional funding was approved in the 2022/23 Budget to further refine the Rural Land Use Strategy in response to community feedback.
