Gisborne - Jacksons Creek footbridge

Gisborne Botanic Gardens

A key pedestrian connection between Dixon Field and the Gisborne Botanic Gardens, the Jacksons Creek footbridge is closed for public safety following the October 2022 flood event.

The bridge has been assessed by Council’s insurer as a total loss, due to separation from its footings as a result of flood water. This has complicated the matter and the length of time required to find a solution and allow public access.

Council is keen for the footbridge to be replaced as soon as possible to restore this important pedestrian connection.

The Gisborne Botanic Gardens are still accessible via the footbridge adjacent to the Gisborne Adventure Playground, via Frith Road or the pathway on the north side of Jacksons Creek. If travelling from Dixon Fields, a path along the south of Jacksons Creek links to the Adventure Playground and then over the bridge to the gardens.

January 2024 update

Council is pleased to advise that negotiations with our insurers were completed in mid-January 2024.

This allows Council to move forward with planning for the necessary repairs in the next few months.

This is positive progress, however Council will still need to obtain legislative and other approvals involving the water catchment and planning authorities, followed by a subsequent procurement process. Consequently, it will take some time before any visible on-site activity occurs.

At this stage, the timeframe for the replacement of the footbridge is likely to be around 12 months.
