Gisborne - Willow Estate Wetland – temporary fencing and access update

Fencing around the wetland areas at Willow Estate, Gisborne, will remain in place for several more months to protect newly planted vegetation while it establishes.

The exact timing for fence removal will depend on how well the plants establish, but it may take up to six months to ensure proper growth and protection.

The waterway is divided into two sections:

  • WQ1 (north of Rothschild Road): This section is largely complete, though dry summer conditions have affected plant growth.
  • WQ2 (south of Rothschild Road): This section is still under construction, with additional planting and fencing expected to be completed soon.

Note: this is a Melbourne Water wetland designed for water quality treatment and habitat, and not a Council park. All planting and establishment works are carried out under Melbourne Water’s design and supervision.

Once open, Council will be responsible only for maintaining the shared paths, grassed areas, and the top embankment perimeter.

While access to the wetland area remains restricted during this establishment phase, several nearby parks are available for recreation within walking distance:

  • Maloney Road Park: features play equipment, BBQs and picnic shelter, table tennis, and a half basketball court
  • Gisborne Fields (Coop Drive): offers a playground, BBQ and picnic shelter, and a dog off-leash area.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this important environmental project progresses.
