Virtual Fencing - Lessons from Victorian Trial - webinar
Next date: Wednesday, 08 October 2025 | 12:45 PM
Hear from Agriculture Victoria Research Scientist Dr Meaghan Douglas, project lead of the recent demonstration of Halter virtual fencing technology at the Ellinbank SmartFarm who will:
- Provide a general overview and background of the Halter technology, including the cues used to virtually fence and virtually herd cows
- Provide an overview of how the technology was used in the demonstration at the Ellinbank SmartFarm
- Discuss how the cows were trained to understand and respond to the cues.
Dr Meaghan Douglas joined Agriculture Victoria’s Ellinbank SmartFarm team in 2014 while doing her Honours year of her undergraduate degree, investigating the positive association between milk protein concentration and fertility in maiden heifers. She then completed a PhD in 2020 investigating the nutritive characteristics of perennial ryegrass and implications for diet formulation for grazing dairy cows.
Meaghan’s key research interests are in ruminant nutrition and cow productivity, with her more recent research investigating the effects of time away from pasture, and potential mitigation strategies to ensure that all cows are fed a diet that will optimise nutrient intake, regardless of milking order. Meaghan led the recent demonstration of the Halter virtual fencing technology at Ellinbank, and was heavily involved in the training and management of the cows.
