Stage One Heritage Review 2010

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council Stage One Heritage Review 2010(PDF, 484KB) was completed in 2010, and revised in 2011, by Frontier Architects for Heritage.

The study area focused on Lancefield, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Woodend and a small selection of places, ranging from Cadello to Woodend, that were unprotected and considered to be more vulnerable. These towns and places had previously been identified in the older studies, the Shire of Kyneton Conservation (Heritage) Study 1990 and the Macedon Ranges Cultural Heritage and Landscape Study 1994. The purpose of the study was to review this previous heritage work, identify gaps, and then document those places that were found to be significant, to ensure they are protected for future generations.

Each of the towns and places was assessed and three precincts, for Lancefield, Romsey and Woodend town centres, were documented for their cultural and historic significance. The review found that a heritage precinct was not warranted for Riddells Creek and recommended that a number of individual places be assessed in future heritage work. Ten individual heritage sites were also assessed and documented, including a grave, former Cobb & Co stables, a church, halls and a number of early properties.

The study was adopted by Council on 24 February 2010 and progressed through Amendment C033macr in 2011. These Heritage Overlays became part of the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme when Amendment C033macr was gazetted on 5 April 2012. This ensures that these heritage places are protected for present and future generations of the Macedon Ranges community and all Victorians.
