Lancefield, High Street - Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Council upgraded the existing pedestrian crossing on High Street, Lancefield to better connect the two shopping strips in the heart of the town centre.
This upgrade involved the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing), providing a safer and more convenient crossing point for pedestrians while encouraging road users to slow down in the area.
Wombat crossings were designed to enhance pedestrian safety for all and to be more accessible for people with mobility challenges, such as those using wheelchairs, strollers, or walking aids. The smooth transition between the road and the raised crossing ensured better accessibility compared to traditional kerbed crossings. By elevating the pedestrian path above road level, the wombat crossing significantly enhanced pedestrian safety by improving visibility. This made pedestrians more noticeable to drivers, allowing them to be seen earlier and reducing the risk of accidents.
Construction of both Raised safety platforms and associated footpath works were completed on 27 February 2026.
This project supported the goals of our Mobility and Road Safety Strategy and was funded under the Victorian Government and TAC’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
We would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience as works were being completed.
