Lancefield, High Street - Pedestrian Safety Improvements

We are improving pedestrian safety in the heart of the Lancefield town centre by upgrading the existing crossing on High Street in Lancefield to a safer and more accessible wombat crossing design.

This project supports the goals of our Mobility and Road Safety Strategy and is funded under the Victorian Government and TAC’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Why is the upgrade happening?

The current pedestrian crossing is already well used, with many people moving between shops, services and local amenities.

The upgrade is not creating a new crossing but simply improving the safety and accessibility of the one already in place.

Wombat crossings make it safer and easier for everyone to cross the road, especially people using wheelchairs, strollers or walking aids.

They have a smooth, raised surface that helps people move across the road more easily than at traditional kerb‑style crossings.

Because the crossing is raised, pedestrians are easier for drivers to see, which helps reduce the chance of accidents.

What about car parking?

While early drafts of the design indicated that some parking spaces could be lost, our Engineering team incorporated community feedback and revised the plans to ensure no net loss of parking.

This will be achieved through updated line‑marking of the existing bays.

Timing of works

Works are expected to be completed by 27 February 2026, weather permitting.

Other minor delays are expected during the works. Please allow extra time if travelling in the area.

High Street / Main Road Intersection

We’ve also heard concerns from the community about the nearby High Street/Main Road intersection.

Although this intersection is not part of the current works and is managed by the Department of Transport and Planning (Main Road is a state-managed arterial road), we are open to advocating for improvements that would simplify the intersection and improve safety.

If you wish to see changes, we encourage you to write to our local state MP, and the Department of Transport and Planning.
