The existing pedestrian crossing on Prince Street in Gisborne, located between Robertson and Hamilton streets, has been upgraded to better connect the two shopping strips in the heart of the Gisborne town centre.
This upgrade includes a raised pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing), providing a safer and more convenient crossing point for pedestrians while encouraging road users to slow down in the area.
Wombat crossings are designed to enhance pedestrian safety for all and be more accessible for people with mobility challenges, such as those using wheelchairs, strollers, or walking aids. The smooth transition between the road and the raised crossing ensures better accessibility compared to traditional kerbed crossings. By elevating the pedestrian path above road level, wombat crossings significantly enhance pedestrian safety by improving visibility. This makes pedestrians more noticeable to drivers, allowing them to be seen earlier and reducing the risk of accidents.
This project is funded under the Victorian Government/Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
