Cultural learning and truth-telling for Reconciliation Week 2023

Learning about our First Peoples’ histories, cultures and achievements will be the focus of number of events supported or hosted by Council as part of National Reconciliation Week.

Officially marked between 27 May and 3 June, this year’s theme of “Be A Voice for Generations” encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

Council welcomes back Brent Ryan, Assistant Director Education at the Yoorrook Justice Commission, accompanied by Community Engagement Manager Nick Butera, for a keynote event on Tuesday 30 May from 7pm at the Kyneton Town Hall. Brent and Nick will be presenting on the last 12 months of Truth Telling across the state and the very important role of Truth Receivers.

Other key events in the shire surrounding National Reconciliation Week include:

  • Malmsbury Smoking Ceremony and Yarning Circle – Sunday 21 May, 11am-1pm
  • Cultural Heritage Community Information Session (Healthy Landscapes) – Friday 26 May, 10am-2pm
  • Kyneton Smoking Ceremony and Yarning Circle – Thursday 1 June, 11am-1pm
  • Riddells Creek Smoking Ceremony and Yarning Circle – Sunday 4 June, 11am-1pm

Council’s Director Community Maria Weiss said it was pleasing to be able to again host representatives from the Yoorrook Justice Commission, having hosted them at a similar event last year.

“The commission’s work to highlight historical and ongoing injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria is incredibly important, so we’re fortunate to be welcoming representatives back to the shire to hear about how it is progressing,” she said.

“Alongside this event, our Council team is supporting or hosting a number of other events for us to better understand our Traditional Owner groups – I encourage those interested to find out more and book their spot.”
