Council supports local businesses to think outside the square

Businesses and not-for-profit organisations across the shire have benefited from Council support in a Victorian Government-funded initiative designed to offset impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund was introduced in October 2021 by Local Government Victoria, empowering councils to work with local businesses and transform outdoor areas for people to enjoy safely during and following the pandemic.

Under Council’s recently concluded program, for which $300,000 was allocated under the Victorian Government fund, the Economic Development team facilitated temporary and permanent infrastructure for outdoor activation including footpath dining barriers, gazebos, pergolas, awnings, blinds, garden beds, potted trees, outdoor seating, lighting and heating.

Fees for outdoor dining and entertainment and footpath trading were also waived and support was provided to local performers, street artists and roving entertainers. 

Those who applied for the funding and benefitted included social enterprises, not-for-profits, neighbourhood houses, sports clubs, retail, hospitality, performing arts, and businesses in the health and wellness sector.

Council’s Acting Director Planning and Environment, Rob Ball, said feedback from the businesses involved was extremely positive.

“Our local businesses and organisations were very appreciative of the support Council was able to provide, especially at a time when they were experiencing a lot of uncertainty and pressure due to the pandemic,” he said. 

“There are now many more safe, accessible and user-friendly outdoor spaces across the shire as a result of this program. It has resulted in a range of new and improved outdoor experiences in the region for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
