Urgent action sought on dangerous Romsey Road crossing in Woodend

Council is supporting a community-driven push to improve pedestrian safety at a dangerous Victorian Government-managed crossing point on Romsey Road in Woodend – calls reinforced by two recent serious incidents.

The well-used crossing point on Romsey Road, at the intersection of High Street, is a key connector between residential housing north of Romsey Road and Woodend Primary School to the south. Despite this, in addition to being near a bus stop, it does not currently have any additional treatments.

Among the asks, Council is seeking a review and assessment of current conditions and that all feasible safety treatments are actively considered and prioritised, rather than limiting the response to a single intervention. This includes identifying and implementing any interim safety measures while longer-term treatments are assessed.

Mayor Kate Kendall said Council had previously raised concerns regarding pedestrian safety at this location with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), including investigating whether crossing improvements could be made amid recent Council-led Old Lancefield Road upgrades nearby.

“As outlined in our recent letter to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, the community expectation on this matter is clear: this is a known safety risk, now reinforced by recent incidents, and it requires timely and decisive action,” she said.

“We would welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Department, the school community, and local residents to support this process, including facilitating community engagement if required.”

In a show of progress already made, pedestrian crossing signs were installed last week on Romsey Road on either side of crossing area, in collaboration with DTP as an initial step.

Council can also confirm a community petition in relation to this matter has been submitted and is expected to be tabled at the May 2026 Council Meeting.
