Help shape the next chapter of the Old Kerrie School site

We recently sought community feedback about the future of old Kerrie School building site after it was destroyed by fire on 16 October 2021.

The site has historical significance (circa 1870) and we want to work with the local community to make sure any future plans for the site will honour its past, and reflect the values and aspirations of the community.

Options for the future of the site

Council has considered and assessed a range of options for the future of the site.

Council has given careful consideration to options and believes the best outcome for the community is option 3.

1. Reinstatement

This would mean rebuilding the structure to be as close to the original as possible. However, due to the unavailability of original materials and new building codes and regulations, the new structure is unlikely to recapture the heritage value of the original building.

2. Rebuild

This would involve a new building that would at best be a modern replica of the old school house. While an insurance pay-out would cover some of the costs, additional funds would be needed, which might prolong the project.

3. Renewal

Using the insurance pay-out, work with the community to develop plans for the future of the site and invest in Kerrie Hall, ensuring the history of the site is captured and respected. This could involve preservation of the school hall site, a memorial to capture the rich history of the site to the community and new facilities so that the site can be used for future generations.

Feedback was invited until 5pm on Monday 23 October 2023.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback. All feedback is currently being reviewed.
