What is an Urban Design Framework?

Last updated on 27 July 2020

The draft Urban Design Framework provides built form and urban design guidelines and streetscape concept plans that seek to maintain Gisborne’s village character.

The quality and design of buildings and streetscapes in the town centre is important to the overall image and appearance of Gisborne making it an attractive place to live and to invest. This in turn contributes significantly to the economic viability of the township.  Managing building scale and the relationship between new and old development is key to retaining the village character of Gisborne.

The draft Urban Design Framework contains design guidelines for future buildings in the town centre, and proposes a new planning control to ensure these are applied to new developments. It also includes concept plans for potential improvements to public open spaces and street networks within the town centre to enhance the pedestrian and urban environment.
