Cat trap hire
We understand that cats wandering in the neighbourhood can be a nuisance for residents and can also pose a risk to native wildlife.
We offer a cat trap hire service to help residents safely contain cats for collection.
Cat trap hire
- Cost: $15 per week
- Bond: $50 refundable bond
- For each additional week the trap is kept, $15 is deducted from the bond
- The remaining bond is refunded once the trap is collected and processed
- Bond refunds can be credited to your rates account or bank account
Cat traps can be collected from the Gisborne Administration Centre or Kyneton Administration Centre.
If you regularly need to trap cats, purchasing your own humane trap may be a more cost-effective option. Our Local Laws team can provide advice on suitable traps.
Setting up the cat trap

If you need Council assistance to set up the trap at your property, an additional non-refundable $22 fee applies.
To avoid welfare issues, do not set traps after 1pm on Fridays, over the weekend, or from midday before a public holiday.
Using your own trap
Cats contained in non-Council traps will only be collected if the trap is deemed safe for Rangers to retrieve.
Rangers will not transport a cat in a resident’s trap and return it later. If a trap is not considered safe, you may be advised to:
- take the cat to a local vet, or
- release the cat and hire a Council cat trap.
What happens to trapped cats
Domestic cats wearing current identification and/or traceable via microchip will be reunited with their owner once registration is confirmed.
Cats without identification or a microchip may be impounded.
