Protecting Aboriginal heritage

Aboriginal cultural heritage is a fundamental part of Aboriginal life and identity. There are places and objects that are important to Traditional Owners and are a significant part of the heritage of all Australians. Information about Aboriginal cultural heritage sites is culturally sensitive and it is protected by the Aboriginal Heritage Act.

Council consults with the Registered Aboriginal Parties (RAPs) regarding significant heritage studies and strategic planning projects in the Macedon Ranges.

The RAPs for Macedon Ranges(PDF, 748KB) are the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Aboriginal Corporations.

Some planning applications will have requirements to protect Aboriginal cultural heritage in the shire. When you are applying for a planning permit, you may be required to prepare a Cultural Heritage Management Plan. A Cultural Heritage Management Plan is a tool for ensuring that significant sites are protected whilst allowing appropriate development or activities in the area.
