Prepare your property and fire plan

You can reduce the risk to your home from a bushfire by taking the time to prepare your property well before the bushfire season starts.

Take Action Now: Prepare a plan, clean up, and talk to your family about fire safety.

Step 1.Watch these helpful videos

Hear from the Bureau of Meteorology, CFA and VICSES for an overview of the 2025-26 summer fire season outlook and what it means for communities in the Macedon Ranges.

Hear from our local CFA, SES, VicPolice, Council and Telstra representatives about how you can take action now and be prepared in the event of an emergency.

Step 2.Prepare your property

  • Slash long grass on your property.
  • Rake up dry grass, leaves, twigs, debris and loose bark. Our resource recovery facilities accept a variety of green waste all year round.
  • Remove woody weeds like gorse and blackberry.
  • Remove any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote a fire.
  • Store flammable liquids and woodpiles away from the house.
  • Clear gutters, rubbish around homes, sheds and fences.
  • Keep your property maintained all summer.

If you want to burn off, check the current fire restrictions and burning off requirements.

Step 3.Prepare your fire plan

Leaving early is your safest option to survive a bushfire.

It is important to have a written and practiced fire plan that includes what you and your family will do on a fire risk day.

Know Your Risk: Every town, property and community is different—understand your local risk and how to prepare.
