Coloured sand product recall

Last updated on 20 November 2025

We’ve noticed some online discussion locally from residents concerned about the recent coloured play sand recall warning, and relevant sand they may have purchased.

You can dispose of it safely through Council by following these steps:

  1. Purchase 2 asbestos disposal bags ($4.50 each) from the resource recovery facility nearest to you (in Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend).
  2. Double bag (using purchased bags) the sand material and any wet wipes used to clean up an area as shown at Safe asbestos disposal
  3. Register to deposit your double-bagged material at the safe asbestos disposal point in Romsey using the form via the asbestos disposal link above.
  4. Once you have registered through this form, you will be given information on how you can deliver your double-bagged material at the nominated facility, and Council will waive the disposal fee.

If you have any further questions relevant to this safe asbestos disposal point, email our Resource Recovery team at MRSC_Resource_Recovery@mrsc.vic.gov.au

In relation to our Council-run kindergartens, where we’ve identified relevant products, we are taking the steps set out by the Department of Education, based on specialist advice from the Australian Department of Health and Worksafe Victoria, to safely collect and dispose of the product.
