Barrm Birrm Nature Reserve

Located on the hillside overlooking Riddells Creek, this open forest features a rich variety of groundcover plants. Covering 120 hectares, the area includes 15kms of walking tracks and is locally known as the Shone & Scholz Land. The name 'Barrm Birrm' is derived from the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language: 'Barrm' meaning 'root of the Yam Daisy' and 'Birrm' means 'many of'. These roots were once a staple food of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, the Traditional Custodians of the land.

The majority of Barrm Birrm is privately owned. Visitors are encouraged to stay on designated walking tracks. Vehicle access is restricted to land managers and emergency services only.

Barrm Birrm is located at the corner of Gap Road and Royal Parade, Riddells Creek, and is next to the Riddells Creek Cemetery.

Barrm Birrm Gift Back Scheme

As part of Council’s long-term goal to see this land permanently protected, landowners may consider transferring the title of their lot to Council through the Gift Back Scheme.

Council will cover the legal and property transfer costs associated with the donation and may also consider paying outstanding rates, subject to eligibility and the requirements of Council’s Financial Hardship Policy.

This provides landowners with an opportunity to contribute to the long-term protection and conservation of Barrm Birrm while removing the ongoing costs and responsibilities associated with owning the land.
