Cycling routes and maps

The Macedon Ranges is made for cycling and offers adventures for all skill levels, whether you're a keen road cyclist, gravel rider or fan of mountain biking.

The region offers easy rides for those just starting out or looking for a leisurely activity, and plenty of challenging rides to excite even the fittest cyclist.

There are inherent risks to riding on any roads. Please be aware of your surroundings and ride to the conditions. Some roads listed in this guide do not have a designated bike lane or shoulder and may contain imperfections or obstacles. Look carefully for vehicles and pedestrians entering and exiting driveways and pathways, and always obey the road rules. Ride carefully, stay safe and enjoy!

Macedon Ranges Ride Guide

The Macedon Ranges Ride Guide was updated and relaunched in January 2021 and offers 18 road, gravel and mountain bike routes to explore.

It was developed with assistance from the Macedon Ranges Cycling Club, Wombat Mountain Bike Club and local endurance rider Tiffany Winchester.

A colour-coded grading system is used to help you identify which rides are suited to your fitness level, skill and ability. These classifications are based on a combination of ride distance, elevation and bike type. It's expected riders are of reasonable fitness and assess their ability before selecting and embarking on a ride.

The Macedon Ranges Ride Guide is available for electronic download as well as in print format.

Printed copies can be picked up from various locations and businesses around the shire including the Woodend Visitor Information Centre, Woodend Cycles and the reception desk at Council's Kyneton Adminstration Centre. Alternatively, email our visitor information centres at vic@mrsc.vic.gov.au

Family rides

The Macedon Ranges Ride Guide features one route that is ideal for families. This is a 16km loop between Romsey and Lancefield that runs along The Federation Trail. It mostly uses a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians and can begin in either Lancefield or Romsey.

Alternatively, families can enjoy kid-friendly bike rides in villages across the shire including:

  • Gisborne Botanic Gardens and nearby Jacksons Creek Walk
  • Woodend's Five Mile Creek walk
  • Malmsbury Botanic Gardens and adjacent nature reserve
  • Kyneton's Campaspe River Walk.
