Australia Day

Every year, on behalf of the Australia Day Council, Council acknowledges and celebrates wonderful and inspiring members of our community.

The Australia Day awards ceremony is combined with an Australian citizenship ceremony and is held at the Kyneton Town Hall on 26 January each year.

The awards provide the opportunity for Council and the community to recognise and celebrate inspirational people who make ongoing contributions to the shire.

Council also offer grants of up to $500 for community groups planning to hold a free Australia Day event.  Please note that nominations for awards and grant applications for 2023 are now closed.

These awards are a chance to recognise members of the Community who help make the Macedon Ranges a great place to live, work and visit. The nominee must be a person who lives, works or studies in the Shire of the Macedon Ranges. There are four award categories including Citizen of the Year, Connecting Communities, Healthy People and Environment and Business and Tourism.

Becoming a citizen

The Department of Home Affairs processes Australian citizenship applications.

When approved by the Department of Home Affairs, the Department will invite you to our next citizenship ceremony. These are held about four times a year, including one on Australia Day. Family and friends are welcome and light refreshments are provided.

During the ceremony, conducted by the Mayor, you will be asked to make the Australian Citizen pledge. You will then receive:

  • a certificate of Australian citizenship
  • a pledge memento card
  • an Australian native plant.
