What population are we working towards?

Last updated on 27 July 2020

Population forecasts have been drawn from forecast.id, an online demographic tool that predicts how the population will change between 2016 and 2036.

Population forecasts use the most recent census data as a starting point, and assess what is driving population change in the area and forecasts how the age structure and household types will change as result. The most recent data used is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 household census.

For Gisborne, the 2020 population is estimated to be 14,406, and is forecast to increase to 20,454 people by 2036.

An understanding of the future population allows us to plan for the future demand for housing, schools, public transport, community services and economic growth.

It is difficult to forecast beyond 15 years with accuracy or certainty.  Changes in planning policy and the economic environment may influence the expected size, distribution and composition of the population. For this reason, strategic plans are subject to review when the data used to create them is outdated.
