Managing traffic and parking at your event

In order to manage traffic and parking at your event you must:

  • Provide adequate car and bus parking, including space for over-flow car-parking and wet weather access.
  • For large events that offer car parking, traffic management and parking companies can be employed to direct traffic. Community organisations such as your local SES branch may also be able to coordinate parking for a donation.
  • Provide disability car-parking.
  • Clearly identify designated pick-up and drop-off points.
  • Provide access for emergency services, event and security staff.
  • Make every effort to ensure minimal disruption to nearby businesses and residents.
  • If you are holding a large event and parking options are limited, you should encourage the use of public transport to and from your venue. If public transport isn’t available, you might want to consider providing a shuttle bus service to and from the closest train station or bus stop.
  • Notify local taxi companies of your event.
  • Make sure that you include directions in any promotional material and have sufficient signage in place on the day. You may be required to apply for a signage permit or approval, depending on when and where you want to display your parking signs. See: Signage requirements or contact the Planning department on (03) 5422 0333 to discuss you event.

Depending on the size of your event, you may be required to complete a Traffic Management Plan, have public liability insurance and obtain approval from authorities such as Victoria Police, VicRoads, Parks Victoria and the Department of Transport.  You must complete the Proposed Event Notification Form at least 8 weeks before your event to make sure that we can provide you with advice about what is required and also to ensure that any permits (if required) can be processed in time.
