There are many different types of signs. In most cases, you will need to apply for a permit to put up a sign, with the exception of some types of temporary community signage.  The following table outlines the different types of signs, and the permits and approvals that you need before putting up your sign.

If you want to display an A-frame sign outside your business, you must apply for a Street Furniture permit. For all other signs that relate to your business, contact our Planning Department on 03 5422 0333 for more information.

Temporary signs for community events, festivals, fetes, garage sales

Council

Community event signage must comply with VicRoads Community Event Signage process that came into effect on 1 July 2016.

Note: depending on the type of event, you may need to provide other types of signage as part of your traffic management plan (if applicable). These requirements will be outlined in your application.

Tourist signing (eg. tourist accommodation, wineries, galleries, tourist attractions)

Read the VicRoads Tourist Signing Guidelines and complete the relevant application form.

Refer to Part C of the Guidelines for further information on the application process.

Submit application forms to Council.

Complete the Tourist Signing Application Fee form (DOCX, 1MB).
