Social and seniors housing

Council no longer manages any social housing. Amendments to the Housing Act in 2004 and changes to the Victorian Government's Housing Policy excluded Council from accessing funding to develop new housing. This meant that we were unable to respond to the increased need for housing in the shire.

In June 2013 Council transferred the bulk of its generalist social housing to Community Housing Victoria. Transferring the stock to a housing association means that Community Housing Victoria can access funding to increase the number and quality of housing stock in the shire.

In September 2016 Council established a five-year management with Wintringham Housing Ltd to manage 49 Seniors Housing units in Gisborne, Lancefield and Romsey, previously managed by Gisborne and District Senior Citizens Homes Inc and the Lions Senior Citizens Villages of Lancefield Romsey Inc.

Next steps

Over time, we intend to increase our strategic role in social housing through planning, partnerships and advocacy on behalf of the community for the continued improvement of social housing in the shire.
