Council preparations for the fire season

Roadside slashing

In the lead up to, and during summer where safe to do so, Council slashes roadsides of Council-managed roads to reduce the likelihood of fires starting from hot vehicle exhausts, mechanical failures and collisions.

We prioritise high-use roads and our contractors work within strict guidelines to complete these works safely.

Regional Roads Victoria manages the roadside maintenance of state-managed roadsides - you can find more information about this schedule at the bottom of this RRV page.

Property inspections and fire prevention notices

In the lead up to, and during summer, our Municipal Fire Prevention Officers conduct property inspections to check for fire hazards.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your property is fire ready and that you maintain your property throughout the fire danger period.

If we identify a fire hazard on your property:

  • we will issue you with a Fire Prevention Notice outlining the work you need to do and by what date
  • your property will be re-inspected to ensure the fire hazard has been removed.

If you do not comply with the conditions on the notice you may be issued a $1,923 infringement, plus any costs associated with completing the works.

If you have received a Fire Prevention Notice and are concerned about completing the works in time, contact us immediately on (03) 5422 0333.
